Tonight | Oliver Stone: The Outsider on SBS 2: the filmmaker confronts war and power – A documentary examines the life and work of Oliver Stone, the director behind Platoon, Wall Street and JFK. Oliver Stone: The Outsider airs Tuesday 6 October 2026 at 8.30pm on SBS 2 and SBS On Demand.

Stone’s films repeatedly revisit political power and conflict, so the programme looks at the experiences that shaped that perspective as well as the controversies it produced.

From Vietnam to Hollywood

The documentary traces the impact of Stone’s Vietnam experience on his political cinema. It considers why war, capitalism and government deception became recurring subjects in his work.

The film also follows his success and the disputes surrounding him. His willingness to challenge accepted accounts brought attention, criticism and an eventual fall from favour in Hollywood.

Rather than focus on one movie, the portrait asks what drives Stone’s determination to expose what he sees as the hidden side of American history and public life.
