Tonight | AI Confidential with Hannah Fry on SBS 2: a chatbot and the Windsor Castle case – Professor Hannah Fry examines an extraordinary chatbot case in the first episode of AI Confidential with Hannah Fry. The three-part documentary premieres Sunday 25 October at 8:30pm on SBS 2 and streams free on SBS On Demand.
The series asks what happens when increasingly powerful AI systems become part of people’s lives. Its opening case centres on a relationship with a chatbot that preceded a serious crime, bringing the human consequences of the technology into sharp focus.
The Windsor Castle case
Episode one, The Boy Who Tried to Kill the Queen, investigates Jaswant Singh Chail. He developed a relationship with an AI chatbot before breaking into Windsor Castle with a crossbow in an attempt to assassinate the Queen.
Fry uses the case to explore how chatbots such as Replika are made and why some people form deep emotional connections with them. She meets developers as well as users who describe being in love with virtual partners.
Human relationships with AI
The programme also meets people using AI to communicate with the dead. Fry examines emerging concerns around AI-induced psychosis and what increasingly intimate human-AI relationships could mean socially. Later episodes in the series consider other real-world cases involving driverless technology and algorithms.
AI Confidential with Hannah Fry airs Sunday 25 October 2026 at 8:30pm on SBS 2 and streams on SBS On Demand.
