Tonight | Tucci in Italy on SBS: Stanley heads to Italy’s German-speaking north – Tucci in Italy heads to the mountains tonight, as Stanley Tucci explores Italy’s northernmost region. The episode airs at 7.35pm on SBS.
Tucci believes the best way to understand a country is through its food. Nowhere is that truer than in Italy. There, the shape of your pasta and the sauce you serve with it speak directly to identity.
Across eight episodes, the actor is on a culinary quest. He explores the connection between the food, the land and the people of the country he loves.
A region with two languages
In episode five, Tucci delves into the complex identity of the far north. Many people there speak German as well as Italian.
Along the way, he uncovers a history of border conflict. That history has left its mark on the people and on their food.
Hay soup and slope-side polenta
The menu is a long way from the pasta of the south. Tucci samples an unexpectedly delicious hay soup and eats polenta on the slopes.
He also skis down a mountain to experience Dirndl Day and fly-fishes in a glacial river.
The result is a different side of Italy from the coastal towns and big cities seen in many travel shows.
Tucci in Italy airs Thursday 5 November at 7.35pm on SBS and streams free on SBS On Demand.
