Tonight | Icebreaker on SBS: a rescue turns deadly – A Coast Guard rescue becomes a survival mystery when officer Sanna Tanner is trapped on an icebreaker stranded in a winter storm. SBS launches the six-part drama with its first two episodes in one late-night screening. It airs Monday 19 October 2026 at 10:50pm and 11:45pm on SBS, with streaming on SBS On Demand.

The isolated ship makes the rescue team dependent on a crew that is already frightened and secretive. Sanna must understand what happened aboard while trying to find a way out of the storm.

Episode one: a dangerous rescue

Sanna and fellow Coast Guard officer Joonas Kapanen board the stranded icebreaker during a rescue operation. The crew’s paranoia is apparent, and the situation turns violent when the cabin-fevered chief engineer attacks Joonas. Sanna rushes to his aid, with deadly consequences. The incident leaves the officers caught up in a mystery far beyond the rescue they expected.

Episode two: no rescue in sight

Sanna is determined to find the chief engineer while the crew plans an escape from the ship. No one appears to be coming to save them. When a crew member takes their hovercraft and disappears, Sanna sets out on foot to search for the missing person. The double-episode premiere moves from the immediate danger on board to the wider isolation of the winter setting.
