Natalie Miller Fellowship applications now open for 2024 grant – The Natalie Miller Fellowship invites women in the Australian screen industry to apply for the annual grant.

Celebrating its 13th year, the Fellowship’s grant of up to $20,000 is designed to inspire the next generation of female leaders to achieve outstanding success at the top of their fields.

The Natalie Miller Fellowship is the only grant of its kind in Australia. Established in 2011 to recognise the unique contribution of screen industry pioneer Natalie Miller AO, the Fellowship is open to women working in the Australian screen industry and aims to provide financial assistance to pursue professional development in their fields.

Since 2012, 12 Fellowships have been awarded to Genevieve Grieves (Co-creator of GARUWA);  Rachel Okine (Head of Scripted, ABC); Harriet Pike (Chief Operating Officer, WildBear Entertainment); Rebecca Hammond (Former Post Production Manager and Manager of Strategic Partnerships at Deluxe); Courtney Botfield (Producer, Distribution and Marketing Consultant and Director of Enrich Community); Sasha Close (Director of Skipping Stone Media; President, Natalie Miller Fellowship); Kristy Matheson (Festivals Director, British Film Institute (BFI)); Miriam Katsambis (VP Business & Legal Affairs APAC, Entertainment One); Anna Kaplan (Producer/Co-founder, Regen Studios & Co-Founder/Co-Chair, Sustainable Screens Australia); Pauline Clague (Founder and Artistic Director of Winda Film Festival) Bridgette Graham (Screen Strategist and Founder, Path to Audience); and Dr Sian Mitchell (Lecturer, Deakin University & Festival Director, Melbourne Women in Film Festival).

The Natalie Miller Fellowship is unique in its role of passionately promoting female leaders across the spectrum of the Australian screen sector, and as a support network for women in the industry. Its vision is to achieve gender diversity in screen leadership, resulting in a greater breadth of storytelling, better company performances, innovation and a dynamic, inclusive and robust industry for all. The Fellowship delivers significant benefits to both the applicant and wider Australian screen community.

President of the Natalie Miller Fellowship Sasha Close says:

‘For over a decade the Natalie Miller Fellowship has recognised the leadership and professional aspirations of women working in the Australian screen industry through a unique program of grants. Applications for 2024 are encouraged from women who have a passion and commitment to the Australian screen sector and proposals to pursue their professional and personal capabilities.’

Opening Thursday August 8, all applications for the 2024 Natalie Miller Fellowship must be received by 5PM on Friday September 27, 2024 and the recipient will be announced at the Australian International Movie Convention, held on the Gold Coast between Tuesday October 29 – Thursday October 31, 2024.

PAST RECIPIENTS TO LEAD SCREEN INDUSTRY PANEL DISCUSSION

Recipients of the Natalie Miller Fellowship Anna Kaplan, Bridgette Graham and Sian Mitchell are also set to lead a panel at ACMI on Thursday 5 September to discuss the latest trends and future directions in the Australian screen industry and beyond through the eyes of its leading women.

Moderated by Sasha Close, President of the Natalie Miller Fellowship, the group will consider and discuss a range of crucial issues through the lens of female and non-binary empowerment such as new technologies and business models, environmentally sensitive practices in production, the role played by film festivals and what shifts in these areas might do to create a more robust screen industry for everyone.

Director of Programming at ACMI Emily Sexton says:

“ACMI is delighted to work with the Natalie Miller Fellowship to profile four incisive and bold female leaders for their vision on where our screen industry is headed – their thorough research will mean we can investigate some really juicy territory. While progress has undoubtedly been made in diverse gender representation in Australian film, no one would disagree there’s much more work to do.”

The panel will take place at ACMI (formerly Australian Centre for Moving Image) in the heart of Melbourne’s Federation Square on Thursday 5 September 6pm and is followed by networking drinks at the ACMI Café + Bar.

Tickets for the panel are free – register to attend HERE.
