Tonight | Australian Story: Sky’s the Limit on ABC: friendship helps a family begin again – Australian Story Sky’s the Limit tonight shares a hopeful account of friendship, welcome and the support that helps a new family begin again.
A New Beginning
The episode follows Naima Ali Farah and her son Feisal Abdi Sugal. They arrived in Melbourne from Somalia ready to build a life in Australia. At first, they expected to face that change largely on their own.
However, when they landed at Melbourne airport last June, a welcoming party was waiting. A group of Australian Jewish friends had committed to helping them settle. That practical support soon became something deeper.
Over the following year, the group formed a close bond with Naima and Feisal. They shared meals, marked religious occasions and learned about each other’s lives. As a result, the relationship grew beyond settlement support.
Building Bridges
Australian Story Sky’s the Limit also looks at the Community Refugee Integration Sponsorship Program. The Federal Government program connects everyday Australians with refugees who are starting a new chapter.
Through that program, the volunteers became guides, advocates and friends. In turn, Naima and Feisal found a wider circle of care at a moment of enormous change.
At the heart of the episode is a simple idea. Connection can grow across religious and cultural differences when people are willing to listen, share and show up. Naima describes the group as one big family. Feisal says they helped fill a space in his heart that had been empty.
Australian Story often works best when one personal story reveals something larger. This episode appears to do that through welcome, trust and friendship.
