ABC’s The Great White Begins Production Starring Hugo Weaving – ABC has unveiled its next major Australian drama, with production now underway on The Great White, a six-part legal workplace series headlined by acclaimed actor Hugo Weaving.
Currently filming in Sydney, The Great White follows brilliant but disgraced barrister Alan Armstrong (Weaving), who is slapped with a twelve-month supervision order for professional misconduct and finds himself working above a panel beater’s shop in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Crushed by debt and desperate to rebuild his reputation, Alan reluctantly takes on what appears to be a simple dangerous dog case. However, the case pulls him into the unexpected world of animal law and a series of battles fought on behalf of animals, ultimately leading to an audacious Supreme Court challenge to free a zoo elephant.
The new drama comes from Academy Award-winning See-Saw Films, the production company behind Slow Horses and Apple Cider Vinegar, and is directed by recent BAFTA winner Alyssa McClelland.
Weaving is joined by an impressive ensemble cast including Eamon Farren, Arlo Green, Sacha Horler, Brigid Zengeni, Miranda Otto, James Majoos, Emily Barclay and newcomer Dinasha Perera.
The creative team also includes Samantha Lang and Mia Wasikowska, who will make her television directing debut on the series. The drama was originated and developed by Samantha Lang and created by acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Ange Betzien.
ABC Head of Scripted Rachel Okine described the series as “one of the most distinctive and surprising stories we’ve ever read”, promising audiences a drama that will make them laugh, cry and reflect.
Executive producer Samantha Lang said the series explores “justice, compassion and our relationship with the natural world” while remaining funny, surprising and deeply human.
Funny, provocative and deeply human, The Great White is a legal drama about a great man who loses his status only to discover the humanity he has lost.
The Great White will premiere on ABC TV and ABC iview in 2027
