Play School celebrates 60 years with special ABC programming slate – Australia’s longest-running children’s television programme is preparing to mark a major milestone, with the ABC unveiling a month-long celebration to honour 60 years of Play School.
Since first airing in 1966, Play School has become a cherished part of Australian childhood, connecting generations of families through creativity, music and imaginative play. The iconic series will officially celebrate its 60th anniversary on Saturday, 18 July.
A birthday celebration fit for Big Ted
To mark the occasion, Play School’s new series Party Animals will launch on ABC iview on Monday, 13 July, with a new episode airing daily from 13–17 July on ABC Kids. Each instalment will feature a different themed party, with presenters and toys creating invitations, preparing food, dressing up and playing games.
ABC Head of Children and Family Melinda Wearne said Play School’s enduring popularity reflected its special place in Australian culture.

This enduring legacy is a testament to the care that goes into making the program and we’re incredibly proud to continue creating innovative and joyful content into the future.”
Behind the scenes of a television institution
As part of the celebrations, Australian Story will take viewers behind the scenes of Play School on Monday, 6 July, offering a rare glimpse into the programme’s development and production process. The special episode will feature interviews with current and former presenters and producers, including Jay Laga’aia, Don Spencer, Rhys Muldoon, Simon Burke, Miah Madden and Justine Clarke.
The ABC also revealed that more than 9,700 entries were received in a nationwide competition inviting children to design their own Play School toy. The winning creation will be professionally made by the Play School team, featured in an episode airing in October 2026 and gifted to its young creator.
Adding to the festivities, a new album titled There’s A Rave In There will be released on Friday, 26 June. Produced by Kristy Lee Peters, the collection transforms classic Play School songs into energetic dance tracks designed for children and adults alike.
