Four Corners on ABC and ABC iview: Click to Kill Examines the AI War Machine – Four Corners investigates the growing use of artificial intelligence in modern warfare in a powerful new episode, Click to Kill: The AI War Machine.
The episode examines how artificial intelligence, data and drones are changing the way military forces make decisions. It also raises urgent questions about accountability, civilian harm and the growing speed of battlefield targeting.
Across modern conflicts, technology now plays a central role. As a result, armies can identify targets faster, process data more quickly and respond with greater force. However, Four Corners asks what happens when machines begin to shape life-and-death decisions.
The investigation moves from the battlefields of Ukraine to the bombardment of Gaza. In Ukraine, drones and data systems have helped a smaller army resist Russia’s invasion. Meanwhile, military leaders in the United States and across NATO countries continue to invest in AI as they look for an advantage over their adversaries.
The program also examines claims from former Israeli intelligence analysts. They allege similar technology helped generate large numbers of targets in Gaza after the October 7 Hamas attacks, with devastating consequences for civilians.
However, the Israel Defence Force rejects the central claims. It says it does not use AI to identify terrorist operatives. It also says every strike goes through individual assessment under international law.
As Australia and its allies invest heavily in military technology, this episode asks a timely question. Will artificial intelligence make wars more contained, or could it make them easier to start and harder to stop?
