Australian Story on ABC and ABC iview: Play School Turns 60 – Australian Story celebrates one of Australia’s most beloved television institutions when Play School marks 60 years on screen.
The new episode, Child’s Play, looks at how a children’s program created in the 1960s has remained part of Australian family life for generations.
With rare behind-the-scenes access, Australian Story explores how Play School is made today. The episode follows the creative process behind an episode about the sense of taste, from early ideas through to studio recording.
Guest writer Benjamin Law guides viewers through the process and introduces the people behind the scenes who help shape the program for young audiences.
“These are the minds, the creators, the designers, the series producer, the early childhood specialists who really know what kids need at what age,” says Law.
The episode also looks back at the long history of Play School. It revisits the show’s most memorable moments, the decisions that made headlines, and the way the series has evolved while keeping its original heart.
Long-time presenter Justine Clarke reflects on why the program still feels so personal to so many Australians.
“We all feel like it belongs to us,” says Clarke. “And it’s no accident that it’s still here after 60 years.”
Australian Story will feature interviews with past and present Play School favourites, including Don Spencer, Justine Clarke, Simon Burke, Jay Laga’aia, Rhys Muldoon and Miah Madden.
