Foreign Correspondent: Gangs of Haiti on ABC goes inside a country living under gang rule as an international force attempts to help restore control before elections can be held.
The new episode airs Tuesday 1 September at 8pm on ABC and ABC iview, with Foreign Correspondent reporting from Haiti as violence, displacement and political instability continue to reshape daily life.
Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, has become the centre of a deep security crisis. With more than a million people displaced and the country’s homicide rate among the world’s highest, the episode examines what gang rule means for residents, police and the fragile push toward national elections.
Inside The Episode
Foreign Correspondent meets gang members who have become a law unto themselves and follows local police as they patrol streets where their numbers and arsenal are often outmatched by the gunmen they are trying to catch.
The report also looks at the international force now in place and the challenge of wrestling control from gangs before Haiti can hold its first elections in more than a decade.
