Mike Amor leaves Channel 7 after three decades with no fanfare – Veteran 7NEWS journalist and presenter Mike Amor has left Channel 7. The Herald Sun reports that the popular news presenter has quietly departed the network after three decades with Seven.

Late on Friday night, Amor emailed Seven newsroom staff to say he had finished up and did not want any fanfare, the Herald Sun reported.

The quiet exit contrasts with the profile Amor built at Seven. He spent close to two decades as the network’s US bureau chief in Los Angeles. He then returned to Melbourne in 2018, where he became a familiar face of 7NEWS Melbourne’s weekend bulletins and fronted some of the newsroom’s major investigations.

In the email, published by the Herald Sun, Amor wrote:

Hi Everyone,
There will be a spare desk from today, as I wrap up my time at Seven.
I didn’t want to make any fanfare, but I wanted to let you all know from me, and to also say thanks for your comradery over the past three decades.
I’ve had a great time here – covered some incredible stories – and will be wishing you all the best success from home – almost as much as I will be willing on my beloved Tigers in 2027
Mike.

TV Central could not find a public announcement or statement from Seven about his departure at the time of writing.

From Los Angeles to Melbourne

For most Australian viewers, Amor was first known as Seven’s man in America. He spent 17 years as US bureau chief, according to Mediaweek. During that posting he covered the September 11 attacks, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and three US presidential elections. He also reported on conflicts in Libya and Gaza.

In September, ahead of the 25th anniversary of the attacks, he recalled reaching the edge of Ground Zero that night. He described the alarms of trapped firefighters as sounding “like a chorus” of voices.

In 2018, Seven brought him home to present the weekend edition of 7NEWS Melbourne. Ashlee Mullany succeeded him in Los Angeles. More recently, he read the weekend news alongside Karina Carvalho and regularly filled in on the Melbourne desk.

A familiar face on 7NEWS Melbourne

Amor also led several of the Melbourne newsroom’s biggest projects. In November 2025 he fronted Breaking Point, a five-night investigation into violent crime in Melbourne. He rode along with Victoria Police on overnight patrols for the series.

At the time, he said: “I’ve been reporting for 7NEWS for 30 years, much of that time as a foreign correspondent covering some deeply troubling stories. But nothing is more concerning than reporting on a new story every night about the rise in crime right here in Melbourne.”

This year, he also reported live from Porepunkah as 7NEWS covered the end of the Dezi Freeman manhunt. In May, he sat down with Collingwood great Scott Pendlebury and his wife Alex for a 7NEWS special.

What happens next at 7NEWS Melbourne?

Seven has not announced who will take Amor’s place on the weekend desk. TV Central will update this story if the network confirms its plans for the Melbourne line-up.
