MOVIE REVIEW | Mortal Kombat II – There’s a fine line between action and comedy. Lean too heavily into the jokes and the stakes disappear. Go too serious and audiences barely get a chance to breathe between the punches, blood splatters and fatal blows. Somehow, Mortal Kombat II manages to walk that line almost perfectly.
After attending the Perth premiere at Event Cinemas Innaloo on Wednesday night, it’s clear this sequel understands exactly what audiences want from a Mortal Kombat film — brutal action, unforgettable one-liners, larger-than-life characters and enough gore to make an entire cinema collectively yell “ewww” at least three separate times.
And yes, those moments are absolutely full on.
But beneath all the carnage, Mortal Kombat II is actually a surprisingly serious film. At its core, this is a story about saving realms, protecting Earthrealm and stopping the terrifying rise of Shao Kahn. The stakes constantly feel enormous, and director Simon McQuoid never lets the audience forget that the fate of entire worlds hangs in the balance.
What makes the film work so well is how naturally it balances that intensity with humour.
There are films where comedy undercuts dramatic tension so much that it becomes difficult to care about what’s happening. Likewise, some action-heavy movies become so relentlessly serious that they forget audiences are supposed to enjoy themselves. Mortal Kombat II avoids both traps. The comedy never overtakes the action, and the action never overshadows the humour. Instead, they complement each other in a way that feels surprisingly polished.
The one-liners in particular are fantastic.
Without spoiling anything, several lines had the entire cinema laughing loudly, and deservedly so. They land perfectly because they arrive at the right moments rather than constantly interrupting emotional or action-driven scenes. When the film wants to be funny, it commits. When it wants to be brutal, it absolutely delivers.
And brutal is the right word.
Fans expecting graphic fatalities and savage fight choreography will not leave disappointed. The action scenes are intense, creative and gloriously excessive in the best way possible. Some sequences are genuinely wince-inducing, with the film fully embracing the franchise’s iconic gore factor.
Visually, the movie also impresses. The cinematography and production design give the film a scale that feels much larger than its predecessor. Whether in elaborate battle arenas or atmospheric realm settings, the film consistently looks fantastic on screen.
The ensemble cast is another major strength.
With so many characters involved, there’s always the risk that some become forgettable or underdeveloped. Yet Mortal Kombat II handles its roster remarkably well. By the end of the film, there’s a genuine connection to multiple fighters, making the emotional stakes feel more meaningful when the chaos erupts.
Karl Urban is especially entertaining as Johnny Cage, bringing exactly the kind of charisma and energy fans would hope for. The supporting cast, including Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Joe Taslim and Hiroyuki Sanada, all contribute strongly to the film’s momentum.
If there’s one small frustration, it’s a familiar action movie cliché rather than a specific problem unique to Mortal Kombat II. Like many films in the genre, there are moments where a character has clearly won a fight and could finish their opponent instantly… but instead pauses to celebrate, monologue or savour the moment. Naturally, this gives the defeated fighter enough time to recover and continue the battle.
It’s the kind of logic-defying moment that appears in countless action and horror films, and while it occasionally stands out here, it’s ultimately only a very minor issue in an otherwise hugely entertaining experience.
The atmosphere at the Perth premiere only added to the excitement. Event Cinemas Innaloo delivered a fantastic presentation, and the crowd energy throughout the screening made the experience even more enjoyable.
For longtime fans of the franchise, Mortal Kombat II delivers exactly what it promises: explosive fights, memorable characters, outrageous gore and crowd-pleasing humour. More importantly, it does all of that while still feeling like a genuinely high-stakes cinematic event rather than simply a collection of fight scenes stitched together.
This is a sequel that understands its audience — and absolutely embraces the chaos.
