Werwulf trailer: Robert Eggers unleashes a haunting new horror tale – Robert Eggers is returning to the darkest corners of folklore in WERWULF, with Universal Pictures Australia releasing a new trailer for the filmmaker’s latest descent into historical horror.
The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp in what Focus Features describes as a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within. Universal Pictures Australia says the film is coming to Australian cinemas soon, with a local release date yet to be announced.
For horror audiences, the project is a significant reunion. Eggers previously directed all three lead actors in Nosferatu, while co-writer Sjón worked with him on The Northman. WERWULF now pushes that creative partnership towards another period nightmare built around belief, fear and transformation.

The new footage presents a grim, mud-soaked world in which faith and terror are difficult to separate. Its imagery points to an isolated community living under the shadow of violence, superstition and something far more dangerous than an ordinary predator.
Rather than explaining the central threat outright, the trailer leans into dread and fractured glimpses of the film’s world. The result keeps the nature of the title creature and the characters’ connections deliberately obscured while establishing the physical intensity promised by the release.
Robert Eggers reunites with familiar collaborators
Eggers directs WERWULF from a screenplay he wrote with Icelandic poet, novelist and screenwriter Sjón. The pair previously collaborated on The Northman, and the new film again brings a detailed historical setting together with myth, brutality and the supernatural.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Lily-Rose Depp lead the cast. Their reunion with Eggers follows Nosferatu, where Depp played Ellen Hutter, Taylor-Johnson appeared as Friedrich Harding and Dafoe portrayed Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz.
Who is producing Werwulf?
Eggers also serves as a producer alongside Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Garrett Bird and Sjón. Bevan and Fellner are the co-chairmen of Working Title Films, adding an experienced production team to the director’s latest collaboration with Focus Features.
Chris Columbus, Eleanor Columbus and Bernard Bellew are executive producers. The brief official synopsis remains intentionally guarded, describing WERWULF as a story of devotion, damnation and the devil within, while promising Eggers’ most visceral and haunting experience yet.
The new trailer and poster place the film firmly within the director’s established interest in historical belief systems and the terror created when private conviction collides with communal fear. They also leave the largest questions — including who or what is being hunted — for the film itself.
