Clayface official trailer reveals DC’s new Gotham horror – Universal Pictures Australia has released the official trailer for Clayface, DC Studios’ body-horror take on the classic Gotham villain.
The new trailer introduces Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, a rising actor whose life is violently derailed before a dangerous treatment changes him forever.
For Australian cinema audiences, Clayface is shaping as one of DC’s boldest big-screen shifts. Rather than a traditional superhero spectacle, the film leans into horror, identity loss and the darker corners of Gotham.
A new face of Gotham
DC Studios describes Clayface as a horror thriller from director James Watkins. Harries stars in the title role as one of Gotham’s most recognisable villains.
The story follows Matt Hagen’s descent from rising Hollywood star to revenge-filled monster. It explores the loss of identity and humanity, corrosive love and the dark side of scientific ambition.
The film also stars Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan. Nancy Carroll and Joshua James also appear.
James Watkins directs
Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with story by Flanagan, based on characters from DC.
The film is produced by Matt Reeves, Lynn Harris, James Gunn and Peter Safran. Executive producers include Michael E. Uslan, Rafi Crohn, Paul Ritchie, Chantal Nong Vo and Lars P. Winther.
Watkins’ creative team includes director of photography Rob Hardy, production designer James Price, editor Jon Harris, visual effects supervisor Angus Bickerton, costume designer Keith Madden and casting director Lucy Bevan.
Australian cinema release
The official site lists Clayface as opening in North America on 23 October 2026 and internationally from 21 October. Australian cinema listings currently place the film in cinemas on 22 October 2026.
DC Studios presents a 6th & Idaho production, a James Watkins film. Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the film globally, with Universal Pictures Australia handling the local publicity release.
