The North Water on ABC – Disgraced ex-army doctor Patrick Sumner (Jack O’Connell) joins The Volunteer as a ship’s surgeon, hoping to lose himself in the tough physicality of an Arctic whaling trip.
But the ferocity of the elements is matched by the violence of his crew mates. In particular, is Henry Drax (Colin Farrell), a harpooner, and a distinctly brutal force of nature.
As the true purpose of the expedition becomes clear, confrontation between the two men erupts taking them on a journey far from solid ground and way beyond the safe moorings of civilisation.

Sumner wakes up in a Mission cabin where a missionary priest has nursed him back to health. With the counsel of the priest and the example of his Inuit, saviours Sumner begins to piece himself together.
As spring arrives, Sumner returns to Hull to seek out Baxter, claim his wages, and start the next chapter of his life.
But is Sumner walking into a trap? And has he really seen the last of Drax?
