TRANSFORMING POWER TO ART: GES-2

In 2014, V–A–C Foundation acquired the 20,000 sq. m former power plant GES-2 in the centre of Moscow, tasked with transforming this defunct building into a cultural institution, the Renzo Piano Building Workshop set out to re-imagine the traditional houses of culture, which first emerged in the late 19th century.

Over the next five years, cameras followed the construction works of the new cultural centre along with the cultural initiatives of the Foundation. This feature documentary interlaces these events, and explores the centre’s quest to be widely accessible, and offer the public a grand creative space.

Can designers change people’s behaviour for the better through design? Can design affect change?

GREAT MINDS OF DESIGN – CANADA follows the designers striving to draw the attention of the public to its own excesses, while incorporating energy-saving green technologies into traditional forms of design. Through reducing waste by keeping only what is essential in their designs, they’re recycling materials, repurposing equipment or tools destined for the landfill, and re-using waste materials. These are sustainable designers who consciously make products that consider the effects their creations have on culture and society.

This 6 part series includes Street artists redesigning the cityscape with clever urban interventions; a designer creating revolutionary solar energy-collecting windows; and an architect creating homes that take advantage of the innate energy efficiencies found in nature.
