EXPRESSIONISM, PHILOSOPHY & DETERMINATION: MENDELSOHN’S INCESSANT VISIONS
Discover the life and career of Expressionist architect Erich Mendelsohn.
From humble beginnings in East Prussia, Mendelsohn’s fledgling career was launched after meeting his future wife, cellist Luise Maas. Her support and critique of his designs would become a crucial element in the work; she was the only person to ever truly understand his philosophy and vision.
Together the couple would become fully immersed in the booming 1920s Weimar Germany art scene, and contemporaries of Albert Einstein, Fritz Lang & Ernest Toller.
From building the Einsteinturm that would test Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity; to pioneering the Art Deco movement Berlin; then becoming Europe’s most sought-after architect in the 1920s before being driven out of Germany by the Nazis; and finally trying to rebuild a life and culture in exile, Mendelsohn’s career would be defined by his refusal to be coerced against his philosophy.
MENDELSOHN’S INCESSANT VISIONS weaves the chronology of Mendelsohn’s life and career between his original designs and love letters to Luise with contemporary vision of his work, laced with reflections from present day architects and locals.
This feature documentary is a testament to the timelessness of Mendelsohn’s visionary design and determination to bring his visions to life; on his own terms.
“I live among incessant visions. It’s hard to catch it and impossible to grasp it fully, to express it in solid terms is the task.” – Erich Mendelsohn
“The new is always dangerous to the existing order, and sometimes lethal.” – Erich Mendelsohn
“When I close my eyes, I see glass towers and fortresses of concrete.” – Erich Mendelsohn
“He had to have it all. Or have nothing to do with it.” – Luise Maas

DANI KARAVAN: HIGH MAINTENANCE
World-renowned Israeli sculptor Dani Karavan has created nearly 100 environmental installations all across the world and has won some of the most prestigious international art awards. Yet he is far from satisfied.
His monumental structures are rapidly deteriorating, advanced age is starting to catch up with him, the political climate in Israel is driving him mad; as is the director of the documentary being made about him.
As he approaches 90, join Dani Karavan as he embarks on an emotional and political journey reflecting upon his body of work with emotion, a bit of frustration, and flashes of humour. En route, the complex and fascinating character of one of the greatest artists of our time is revealed, along with a serious political and artistic conflict over his latest commission, in HIGH MAINTENANCE.
“If nature offers you something like this, you’d be a fool not to accept it.” – Dani Karavan
“I arrive at a site, and the site speaks to me. And I listen.”
“My touch is the proportions.”
“My art is political. And when they say ‘art and politics don’t belong together,’ I reply with a single word: Guernica.”
