Flying Bark reveals Sydney work on Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender — Sydney-based animation studio Flying Bark has opened up about its major role in bringing Paramount+’s Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender to screens.
The studio contributed 67.5 minutes of footage to the animated feature, which premieres globally on Paramount+ on Saturday, 25 July at 5pm AEST.
For Australian viewers, the release puts a major local studio at the centre of a global streaming franchise. It also highlights how Sydney-based animation talent is now working at scale on international premium animation.
A Major Sydney Animation Project
Flying Bark says the project was built across a three-year production period. It involved 327 artists and crew from more than 30 countries, working across 20 departments.
The studio produced 97,340 frames for the film. Its work used Flying Bark’s hybrid animation pipeline, which blends traditional hand-drawn 2D animation with CG techniques.
The company says its contribution includes some of the film’s most ambitious moments, including character and environment work connected to the next chapter of the Avatar franchise.
Flying Bark’s Global Growth
Flying Bark has studios in Sydney, Los Angeles and Madrid, with a global workforce of almost 700 people.
The release follows a busy period for the studio, including Shaun Tan’s Tales from Outer Suburbia and the Netflix animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85.
According to the synopsis, Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender follows Aang as he learns of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. With help from his friends, he begins a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands.
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender premieres globally on Paramount+ on Saturday, 25 July at 5pm AEST.
