The Survivors on Netflix special screening with cast and crew – Tonight, the cast and crew of THE SURVIVORS celebrated the series release at a special screening event, held at ACMI in Melbourne ahead of the global release on Netflix this Friday 6 June.
In attendance included cast members Robyn Malcolm, Damien Garvey, Thom Green, Miriama Smith, Martin Sacks, Julian Weeks, Shannon Berry and directors Cherie Nowlan and Ben Lucas.
The Survivors is both a gripping murder mystery and an intense family drama. The series was shot on-location across Tasmania’s spectacular coast and Melbourne’s Dockland Studios.
Extended cast, crew and creators were also in attendance including series Showrunner, Executive Producer and Writer Tony Ayres who participated in a fireside chat with journalist James Button.
Tony Ayres on The Survivors being a murder mystery:
“Murder mystery is a form that people love, it’s like a rubix cube or a puzzle that the audience must figure out…You want to ask everyone at the end of episode one, ‘who do you think did it?’'”
Tony Ayres on the themes of masculinity depicted in the series:
“Jane [Harper]’s social commentary is subtle. We wanted to keep this subtlety but show how these two young men that died become lionised, while a young woman is never found, and there is no story for her. She is conveniently forgotten.”
Tony Ayres on why finding the perfect locations in Tasmania was essential in bringing the story to life on screen:
“Landscape is such a huge part of the book. Eaglehawk Neck became central to the look and feel of the series…The emotional landscape matched the physical landscape.”
Tony Ayres on the on-screen performances:
“What makes the show work is the quality of the acting. There is no weak performance. There is nothing in it that doesn’t resonate with me emotionally.”
ABOUT THE SURVIVORS
Synopsis: Kieran Elliott’s life changed forever when two people drowned and a young girl went missing in his home town of Evelyn Bay. Fifteen years later, returning with his young family, the guilt that still haunts him resurfaces. When the body of a young woman is found on the beach, the town is once again rocked by tragedy and the investigation of her death threatens to reveal long-held secrets, the truth about the missing girl, and a killer amongst them.
