Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is Netflix’s live-action prequel set in the 1950s – Netflix has announced Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a live-action Stranger Things spinoff from the Duffer Brothers and Kate Trefry. The series, also produced by 21 Laps Entertainment, is set to debut in 2028.

Netflix revealed the series on Stranger Things Day, the annual fan celebration held each year on November 6. It is a prequel set in the 1950s, before the events of Stranger Things and before the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

It is the latest expansion of the franchise since the original series ended its run with a fifth and final season. Earlier this year, TV Central also covered the animated spinoff in Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 on Netflix date announcement.

We’ve been dreaming of Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure for many years now, and to see it become a reality is surreal and exhilarating. We’re so grateful to our incredible team of collaborators: our showrunner Kate Trefry, who has been in the trenches with us since Season 2 and wrote Stranger Things: The First Shadow; and our director, Joe Wright, a brilliant artist whose work we’ve long admired. We can’t wait for you to see what they’re cooking up. It’s Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh, with a new setting, new heroes and villains, and new… actually, we’re not allowed to say any more. Now, on to casting. In the meantime — watch the skies, nerds!

Kate Trefry and Shawn Levy on the new chapter

The Duffer Brothers gave me my first paying job in Hollywood, and it has been a joy and a fever dream ever since. Now, it is my insane honor and privilege to be bringing this new chapter of Stranger Things to life alongside them and our incredible director Joe Wright. With the support of Netflix and 21Laps, we have had the time of our lives returning to all the horror, wonder and mystery of the flagship, while also telling a wholly new story, one we hope will blow your minds and break your hearts all over again. There are so many more mysteries to explore. Welcome to Other Worlds.

The Stranger Things phenomenon

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things debuted in 2016 and became a global phenomenon, with more than 1.2 billion views across Seasons 1–4.

According to Netflix, the fifth and final season delivered its biggest English-language premiere week. That placed it alongside Season 4 on Netflix’s Most Popular List. It also pushed Seasons 1–4 back into the Global Top 10 for eight weeks and drove record New Year’s Day viewership.

Rooted in ’80s nostalgia, the series famously sent Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” and Prince’s “Purple Rain” back onto the charts. It has also earned more than 70 awards globally, including Emmys and a SAG Award for Drama Ensemble.

Beyond the screen, the franchise spans the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, the Olivier and Tony-winning stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a series of books, Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights, Stranger Things: The Diner and immersive experiences at Netflix House.
