Phony trailer reveals Connie Britton mystery series for Disney+ – Disney+ has released the first trailer and key art for Phony, a new coming-of-age mystery starring Connie Britton and Sam Nivola.
The half-hour Hulu Original series will premiere in Australia on Tuesday, 20 October, exclusively on Disney+. It follows teenager Sonny after a serious car accident. When he wakes in hospital, he becomes convinced that Ellen is no longer really his mother. She is his only parent and best friend.
For Australian viewers, the international Disney+ launch brings the series here on the same date as its US Hulu premiere. Therefore, the mystery begins without the long delay that once separated many American streaming releases from their Australian debuts.
What the Phony trailer reveals
The trailer establishes a family relationship built on unusual closeness. Sonny regards Ellen as both his mother and closest confidante. As a result, his suspicions after the crash feel especially unsettling. He has not simply returned home to a parent who seems different. Instead, he believes the person at the centre of his life has been replaced.
That idea gives Phony two mysteries to explore. First, Sonny must work out what happened around the accident. He must also decide whether his fears reflect a genuine threat or the trauma of waking in hospital. Meanwhile, the series adds the uncertainty of adolescence and the pressure of convincing other people that something is wrong.

Connie Britton and Sam Nivola lead the cast
Britton stars as Ellen, while Nivola plays Sonny. Their pairing carries the story’s emotional tension. Ellen is the teenager’s sole parent and best friend. However, Sonny’s growing distrust makes every familiar interaction feel potentially dangerous.
The wider cast includes Meera Syal as Sharla and Grace Brennan as Mallory. Mahaela Park plays Chloe, Maliq Johnson plays Vogel and Colter Lee appears as Weldon. Together, these characters expand the mystery beyond Sonny’s home. They surround him as he tries to make sense of what happened.
The creative team behind Phony
Nick Paley wrote and directed the first episode. He also executive produces the series alongside co-showrunner Anthony King. King’s credits include Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat and The Afterparty.
In addition to starring, Britton serves as an executive producer. Charlie Alderman also executive produces through Charlie’s Production Company. Drew Goddard and Sarah Esberg represent Goddard Textiles, while Andrea Massaro is a co-executive producer.
The series is produced by 20th Television. Finally, its half-hour format gives the mystery a compact shape and a strong character focus. It is not a conventional hour-long thriller.
When Phony premieres on Disney+
Phony premieres Tuesday, 20 October, exclusively on Disney+ in Australia. The series launches on Hulu in the United States on the same day.
