Kingdom Hearts original TV series greenlit for Disney+ – Kingdom Hearts is being developed as an original anime television series for Disney+.
The new series, currently using the working title Kingdom Hearts, is inspired by the globally popular video game franchise created through the collaboration of Disney and Square Enix.
For TV Central readers, the greenlight gives Disney+ another major brand-led animation play. It also brings one of gaming’s most recognisable Disney-linked franchises into television for the first time.
A New Story For Disney+
The series is being developed in partnership with video game creator Tetsuya Nomura and the creative team at Square Enix.
Disney says the anime series will reimagine the adventure with a brand-new story. It will expand the Kingdom Hearts universe while celebrating the characters that have built a large global fanbase.
The announcement was made at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.
“Kingdom Hearts has captivated gamers everywhere with its unique blend of adventure and imagination,” said Ayo Davis, president, Disney Kids & Family.
“There’s something really exciting about taking a world fans have spent years exploring through the games and bringing it to life in a completely new way.”
Davis said the creative team is working closely with Nomura, with the series designed to feel unmistakably like Kingdom Hearts while giving fans a new way to experience its world.
Part Of A Growing Animation Slate
Kingdom Hearts joins Disney+’s growing slate of original animated series. Other titles on the slate include Dragon Striker, Phineas and Ferb, Big City Greens, Messi and the Giants, Warrior Cats and Journey.
The move continues Disney+’s focus on stories built around magic, wonder, adventure and heart for kids and families.
