Futurama to end regular seasons after Season 14, but Disney+ specials are coming – Futurama is set to finish its current run of regular seasons after Season 14, with Hulu reportedly having no plans to order a fifteenth season of Matt Groening’s animated science-fiction comedy.
For Australian viewers, the change affects Disney+. Hulu is not a standalone streaming service in Australia, and the latest seasons of Futurama have instead been released internationally through Disney+. Season 14 is streaming now on Disney+ Australia alongside the show’s earlier seasons.
However, this is not an immediate end to new Futurama. Three extended specials are already in production, beginning with a Christmas instalment in 2027. The announcement therefore marks the end of regular season orders for now, rather than the final appearance of Fry, Leela, Bender and the Planet Express crew.
Futurama Season 14 closes the current regular run
TVLine reports that Hulu is not planning additional seasons after Season 14. Its tenth and final episode is fittingly titled Final Ending: The Last Conclusion.
The finale’s title reflects the show’s unusual history. Futurama has been cancelled, revived and apparently concluded several times since its original 1999 premiere.
Creator Matt Groening remains optimistic. In an interview with Variety, he said the writers, performers and animators still want to tell more stories. His message about the series’ future was characteristically direct: “We will rise again.”
Three Futurama specials are still coming
The Planet Express crew already has three “XXXL-sized” specials ahead. The first will be a Christmas-themed story featuring the return of Robot Santa and is expected to stream in 2027.
Details about the other two specials remain under wraps. Groening has indicated that the longer instalments will revisit elements of the characters’ overall story arcs, pay off ideas hinted at across the series and answer questions held by long-time viewers.
That distinction is important. No Season 15 is currently planned, but the final Season 14 episode will not be the last new Futurama production already commissioned.
What the change means for Australian viewers
Disney’s official Australian streaming page currently carries Futurama, including Season 14. Australian fans therefore do not need access to the US-only Hulu service to watch the current run.
The 2027 specials are being produced for Hulu in the United States. Based on the current international release arrangement, Disney+ is the likely Australian home for those specials. Disney has not yet announced Australian release dates, so their local timing remains to be confirmed.
The existing Australian Disney+ library is not being removed as part of the announcement. Viewers can continue watching the earlier Fox and Comedy Central episodes, the Hulu-era revival and the latest season through the one service.
Futurama has ended before
Futurama originally ran on Fox from 1999 until 2003. Strong home-video sales and continuing fan support helped bring it back through four direct-to-video films released from 2007.
Comedy Central then revived the series for new television episodes in 2010. That run ended in 2013 with Meanwhile, an episode designed to work as another possible series finale.
A decade later, Hulu brought the show back again in 2023 with its original voice cast. Four more numbered seasons followed through 2026, taking the streaming listing to Season 14.
The repeated revivals explain why the creative team is reluctant to describe the latest development as a permanent cancellation. Even if regular seasons have stopped, the franchise has repeatedly found a new format or platform.

The voice cast includes Billy West, Katey Sagal, John DiMaggio, Tress MacNeille, Maurice LaMarche, Lauren Tom, Phil LaMarr and David Herman.
Groening created the series and developed it with David X. Cohen. Executive producers include Groening, Cohen, Ken Keeler and Claudia Katz. The series is produced by 20th Television Animation, part of Disney Television Studios, with animation by Rough Draft Studios.
