Experts: Shane Heal, Stuart O’Grady, Elise Kellond-Knight, Geoff Ogilvy and Stephanie Rice with John Steffensen and Matt Mitcham in Paris.

Highlights & expert opinions from today’s shows:

Former Boomer, NBA player and two-time Olympian Shane Heal on the Opals chances of picking up their first medal since 2012.

“I am very confident, very confident. I reckon we will get it done. We have more talent than Belgium and they’ve got one superstar we’ve got to shut down but I think we’re good to go. I think they’re in a good headspace too, the Opals. Lock it in.”

John Steffensen on Jessica Hull’s history-making Silver medal in the Women’s 1500m behind the greatest of all time Faith Kipyegon (KEN).

“I am so proud of Jess. I have gotten to know her and had a lot of interaction with her over the year and you could see the relief to get that global medal in the 1500m. We talked about how big that was, in a blue ribbon event. We saw Susan Ejore go out hard for her compatriot and we saw Faith Kipyegon sort of sit on the back of them. We knew Faith would be hard to beat but Jess did everything.”

“I actually thought halfway through the race, Jess was doing a lot, she was tracked wide and there was a lot of jostling but I think Jess is even better than that run that she just did. She didn’t have a compatriot to help her pace, protect her within the bunch and she just fought extremely hard.”

“You could tell she [Jess] wanted that. She’s in the second half of her career so winning that Olympic medal is fantastic. This is one for Australia, in a blue ribbon event, take on the world’s best and she did that. Going into 2032, Jess might not be there but there will be a young girl, or even a young boy watching saying I need that feeling. That is what Jess provided for us tonight, just like Cathy Freeman did.”

Former Boomer, NBA player and two-time Olympian Shane Heal on USA’s 17th Olympic Gold in the Men’s Basketball.

“I told you during the week, people were writing him off – Steph [Curry] was always going to come back! Two minutes 43 left in the game, France were only down by three and Steph Curry stepped up and goes bang, bang, bang – three threes to finish the game. He is an absolute freak and he carried Team USA.”

“They all have to sacrifice and there were some games Steph Curry didn’t take too many shots and LeBron didn’t and they did it by committee and they have a incredible amount of talent and got it done. Let’s not forget they really got out of jail against Serbia to make the Final so they will be relieved to have walked away with the win. They will be pretty confident the Americans but deep down they will know they were lucky to get through.”

“Credit to Kevin Durant. Going to four Olympic Games and putting yourself out there and giving up your off season. These guys play 82 games plus playoffs every single NBA season so it’s a big commitment but what an opportunity to go there and add Gold to the resume.”

Olympic Gold Medallist Matthew Mitcham on Cassiel Rousseau’s fourth place in the Men’s 10m Platform Final and Maddison Keeney achieving a history-making Silver in the Women’s 3m Springboard.

“It was so close. It is slightly disappointing, him being a World Champion and being so close to getting that medal. There were a couple of little fluffy dives, tiny things, very small mistakes that had it been any other competition it wouldn’t have mattered so much but obviously being Olympic Finals we’re expecting nines to nine-and-a-halves for all the dives.”

“They [Chinese divers] were amazing as always but made a couple of mistakes that you wouldn’t have expected here in the middle of the competition got really exciting and the Japanese diver was leading the competition and then out of nowhere fluffed one of his dives. That is why diving is so exciting and predictable.”

“I was proud as punch of Maddi. Again I think Maddi and Cass were our two greatest hopes for individual medals. I have always felt that Maddi has never actually reached her potential. She is by far away, heads and shoulders stronger than all the other girls, physically stronger. She gets so much more height than all the other girls. She did a dive no one else could do so she had the highest degree of difficulty. She has always been limited by because of how strong she is, she’s always had injuries – her knees and her ankles – because of the height that she can get.”

Major-winner Geoff Ogilvy looks back at New Zealand’s Lydia Ko taking Gold and standing on the podium at her third straight Games.

“She’s now got Gold, Silver, Bronze; she’s been the best Olympian as far as Golf is concerned since it’s come back [into the Games]. She looked a champion really from about day two. It was a really tough course for the women, they found it really tough and it got a lot firmer for them. It stopped raining – the men had it kind soft and a little bit playable – it got harder and harder as the tournament went on and the cream rose to the top and she was all class at the end.”

Geoff Ogilvy reflects on Hannah Green’s comeback to challenge for the medals ahead of the Women’s Open at St Andrew’s later this month.

“She’s going to look back at a missed opportunity I think although she started this tournament really poorly. [She] was quite a long way back after one round – she played great the last three rounds. Had every opportunity last night, she was one of the best players on the course – she still shot three-under par I think last night. She had her chances on the last few holes. There’s three or four girls I think they’re going to look back thinking ‘wow, I had a really good chance to pinch that Bronze medal’. She didn’t quite get there, but she’s going to springboard off this.”

Olympic Gold medallist Stuart O’Grady talks about Portugal winning their first-ever Olympic medal on the velodrome.

“It’s massive – it’s their first-ever Gold medal in cycling, their first ever in the Madison. [Rui] Oliviera is a World Champion in the Omnium on the track but for this actual event they haven’t won a Gold medal before so it’s just a massive moment and you can just see the smile, the passion – these guys ride their bike every day of the year and have done since they were little kids dreaming of representing their country like we all did, and to be on the podium.”

Stuart O’Grady looks at the Australians’ chances of a medal in the Men’s Keirin on the final day of the Games.

“The two Matty’s [Richardson and Glaetzer] – I believe in them. They looked really good. Matty Richardson probably had the easiest heat [in the Keirin], had a really nice run. He was down in last position but got a nice run and cruised through, actually. Matty Glaetzer was probably a bit more difficult but took control of the race.”

Stuart O’Grady believes Georgia Baker is a chance of standing on the podium in the Women’s Omnium.

“She’ll be quietly confident to get a medal. We’ve got the four events: the scratch race which she’s really strong in, the tempo race, the elimination and then the big final which is the points race. I believe she can do it, she’s got good experience, she was also Commonwealth Games Gold medallist in Glasgow on the road so [she is] really able to transfer from road to track, hopefully she can bring that experience in – she’s a superstar, so hopefully she can go out with a bang.”

Former Aussie Shark Billy Miller believes the Men’s Water Polo Gold Medal match between Croatia and Serbia will be a fiery encounter.

“The history between these two countries isn’t great, there’s a lot of tension between these two. Every time they play, the atmosphere is electric – the countries basically hate each other. It’s a bigger rivalry than Queensland versus NSW, put it that way.

“Tonight’s game will be absolutely amazing and it will be one for the ages.”

Matilda Elise Kellond-Knight believes USA are ready to be a Women’s Football powerhouse once again after winning Gold in Paris.

“Now they’ve lined all their ducks up. They’ve got a great coach at the helm and they’ve got a squad with an average age under 27 so going into the next cycle they’re going to have a target on their back I think.

“We can all be concerned about the playing group coming through now if you’re going to have to face them because they’ve got so much experience in finals football. Their track record is just unheard of; it’s almost comparable to the women’s basketball – they’re just unstoppable.”
