AUSSIES IN ACTION
Athletics
- Jess Hull backed up her incredible recent form to claim Silver in the Women’s 1500m. She becomes Australia’s first woman, and just fourth ever athlete to win an Olympic 1500m medal. Hull (3:52.56) finished just behind all-time great Faith Kipyegon (KEN) in a time which eclipsed the old Olympic Record.
- At 42 years of age, Kathryn Mitchell has finished in the top eight at her fourth straight Olympics, placing seventh in the Women’s Javelin. Mackenzie Little was 12th.
Water Polo
- After an unbeaten run to the Gold Medal Match, the Stingers had to settle for Silver with Spain claiming an 11-9 victory in the Olympic decider.
Weightlifting
- Eileen Cikamatana remained in medal contention throughout the Women’s 81kg competition, finishing just 5kg off the podium in fourth place.
Diving
- World Champion Cassiel Rousseau nailed one of the highest-scoring dives of the Men’s 10m Platform competition but finished just out of the medals in fourth.
Golf
- Hannah Green recovered from a five-over first round to finish one stroke off the podium in a share of fourth place.
Sport Climbing
- Oceania Mackenzie was in medal contention after the Bouldering stage of the Women’s Bouldering & Lead, eventually finishing her second Olympic campaign in seventh.
INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS
Athletics
- Faith Kipyegon (KEN) has emulated the efforts of Ryan Crouser (USA, Men’s Shot Put) and Nafissatou Thiam (BEL, Women’s Heptathlon) in achieving an Olympic three-peat at the Stade de France by taking out the Women’s 1500m in a new Olympic Record time.
- Ethiopian Tola Tamara ran his way to Marathon Gold with a new Olympic Record of 2:06:26 as Kenyan legend Eliud Kipchoge failed to defend his title. Tola entered the Olympic marathon as a substitute two weeks ago, filling in for an injured teammate – now he is on top of the world. Bashir Abdi (BEL) upgraded his Tokyo 2020 Bronze to Paris Silver (2:06:47), while Benson Kipruto (KEN) claimed the Bronze (2:07:00).
Patrick Tiernan finished 24th with the fastest time by an Australian in an Olympic Marathon (2:10:34) with Andrew Buchanan 45th and Liam Adams 49th. - After a tactical error cost him a spot on the podium in the Men’s 1500m, Jakob Ingebrigtsen (NOR) wasn’t going to make the same mistake in the 5000m, powering his way to Gold to add to his 2022 and 2023 World Championship titles.
- Hamish Kerr pushed New Zealand to its greatest-ever Olympics record, taking Gold in a jump-off in the Men’s High Jump. It sent New Zealand to nine Gold medals in Paris, surpassing the eight achieved 40 years ago in Los Angeles.
- USA won the final two events on the track, winning both the Men’s and Women’s 4x400m Relays.
Football
- A 57th minute goal to Mallory Swanson was the difference in the Women’s Gold medal match, USA defeating Brazil 1-0 for their fifth Olympic title and first since London 2012.
Water Polo
- The Netherlands, led by Sabrina van der Sloot (six goals) won the Bronze Medal after a stunning last second goal by Van der Sloot secured a 11-10 victory. The USA’s historic medal-winning run at the Olympic Games comes to a close.
Golf
- Lydia Ko scored one of New Zealand’s three Gold medals on Day 15, claiming the Women’s Golf tournament by two strokes ahead of Esther Henseleit (GER) who came from seven strokes back at the start of the round to claim Silver.
Basketball
- Closing in on the final quarter, USA was on track for its eighth title in the last nine Olympics, leading the Men’s Gold Medal Match against the home nation.
- A dominant first quarter ended up making the difference in the Men’s Bronze Medal Match with Serbia defeating Germany 93-83. NBA MVP Nikola Jokić scored the fifth triple-double in Olympic history to guide his side to victory.
Weightlifting
- Lasha Talakhadze (GEO) has become the first person to win the Men’s Super Heavyweight Gold medal at three consecutive Games.
