Cornes: “Are you pinching yourself with how good life’s going for you at the moment?”
Ginnivan: “Yeah, I guess so. Everything’s falling into place nicely with football, off field, good stuff, relationships. So yeah, it’s been a great start to 2026.”
Cornes: “What’s been the biggest change in your life that has led to the form that you’re now showing and your happiness in general?”
Ginnivan: “I think the belief in myself that I can be a great footballer. I think probably in the past, I thought that I could just be a good footballer and just kick goals, stay forward, but I really believe that I can leave a legacy at Hawthorn and be a great player. So, that’s been a big mindset change.”
Hodge: “Take us back to the discussion. You were a premiership player at Collingwood, and then all of a sudden you’re at Hawthorn, you’re a Hawthorn kid growing up. How did those talks start?”
Ginnivan: “Yeah, well I guess one of my favourite players was you so it’s nice sitting next to you. But yeah, obviously a premiership player at the Pies and loved my time there and I’m so grateful for the Pies and have made great relationships there. But yeah, it was an awkward conversation, I guess, but when you’ve seen love from Sam Mitchell and the Hawks being my childhood club, it’s a bit of a no-brainer.”
Hodge: “What was your discussion as far as your role? When you were at Collingwood, you were a forward pocket. But what we’ve seen you turn into is a winger trying to push into the midfield. Were the initial discussions you saying that you want to push further up the ground?”
Ginnivan: “Well, I think he’s had a case study of Dylan Moore. He’s seen what a forward pocket can do and then go into that higher forward midfield role. So I had to get fit and I did in that off-season and it was something I needed, good strong leaders around me and good people and I had good mentors.”
Thomas: “The wing role though, it is unique, because as someone who is just a bull hunter that you can be at half forward, you have to hold your width at times, and people don’t really understand that. The timing of when to come off, when to stretch the other way, is that something you’ve worked on, you’ve watched a lot of tape on, or has it come a bit more naturally to you?”
Ginnivan: “Yeah, I think the wing role has suited me just because of my ability to read the play. So, that’s one of my great strengths, my footy, obviously. IQ and stuff like that. So that’s been easy. But it is sometimes annoying when you’re sitting out on the wing and you really want to go in, but obviously team rules and the structure you’ve got to hold out. But you know, that’s football.”
