AFL on Seven Sir Doug Nicholls round fixture – Historic Dreamtime match headlines AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round. Mega fortnight of footy on Seven and 7mate
Footy fans will be treated to an incredible two weekends of the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round live and free on Seven, headlined by the marquee Dreamtime blockbuster between traditional rivals Richmond and Essendon on Saturday night.
A mainstay of the AFL calendar, the 2023 Sir Doug Nicholls Round will celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to Australian Football and the country.
The official 7AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round promo premiered on Tuesday night across the screens of Seven, featuring ARIA Award-winning Coodjinburra artist Budjerah performing a specially commissioned rendition of One Song, written by the late Archie Roach. Budjerah’s emotional tribute to the Gunditjmara and Bundjalung elder will be heard throughout Sir Doug Nicholls Round on Seven.
Kicking off with tomorrow night’s Yartapuulti (Port Adelaide) versus Narrm (Melbourne) clash at Adelaide Oval, Seven’s team will broadcast live from the ground, with Brian Taylor, James Brayshaw, Luke Hodge, Matthew Richardson, Abbey Holmes and the most decorated Indigenous player of all time, Shaun Burgoyne, behind the mic for 7AFL.
Following its long-awaited return to the MCG in 2022, fans can again witness the historic Dreamtime at the ‘G match between Richmond and Essendon live and free on Channel 7 and 7mate this Saturday night from 6.30pm AEST.
Seven’s Dreamtime team will include three-time Brisbane Lions premiership player Chris Johnson alongside Hamish McLachlan, Luke Darcy, Jobe Watson and Shaun Burgoyne.
Seven’s Dreamtime at the G coverage will include a Welcome to Country conducted by Aunty Joy Murphy AO, while Essendon and Richmond Football Clubs will each perform a Dreamtime ceremony dance prior to the opening bounce. The Half-Time Show will feature a special performance by the Archie Roach band featuring Australian Football Hall of Famer Michael Long, award winning musician, dancer and Archie Roach’s son, Amos Roach, award-winning singer-songwriter Bumpy, Mo’Ju and singer-songwriter Radical Son.
The performance will feature a special rendition of ‘Colour of your Jumper’ written by the late Australian singer-songwriter Archie Roach which pays tribute to the 30-year anniversary of Nicky Winmar’s stance against racism.
On Sunday afternoon, 7AFL will head to the MCG as Carlton take on ladder leaders, Collingwood, with a half-time feature interview with proud Yorta Yorta man and the first Indigenous Australian AFL umpire, Glenn James OAM, who has been named as the 2023 Sir Doug Nicholls Round Honouree.
Growing up in the regional Victorian town of Shepparton, James first began his umpiring career in country football, before rising through the ranks to umpire 166 VFL matches between 1977 and 1985, including the 1982 and 1984 VFL Grand Finals. James’ contribution to umpiring was recognised when he was named umpire in the Indigenous Team of the Century.
In Round 11, football’s #1 commentary team will be in Sydney to call the annual Marn Grook Game between the Sydney Swans and Carlton at the SCG on Friday night, before heading to Darwin on Saturday to bring footy fans all the action from the Gold Coast Suns versus Western Bulldogs clash at TIO Stadium.
In a coup for footy fans, Darwin-born Shaun Burgoyne will return to the Top End to provide special comments as the Suns and Dogs take to the field.
Before the on-field action kicks off, everyone’s favourite footy show The Front Bar will return at 8.30pm AEST tonight on Seven and 7plus, with an incredible line-up of the game’s best Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players joining Andy, Mick and Sam at the bar.
Shaun Burgoyne, Michael Long and Nicky Winmar will be guests at The Front Bar this week to share the personal significance of Sir Doug Nicholls Round, while reflecting on their monumental football careers.
Three AFL clubs will swap their club’s name for traditional in-language names across Sir Doug Nicholls Round, with Melbourne becoming Narrm for the second consecutive year, while Fremantle will change its name to Walyalup and Port Adelaide will be referred to as Yartapuulti.
Throughout Rounds 10 and 11, all 18 AFL clubs will wear specially designed SDNR jumpers, while all AFL Umpires will wear dedicated uniforms celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
The iconic Sherrin football will feature artwork designed by Tiwi Island artist Aunty “Lulu” Coombes and for the first time, will replace the word Sherrin with the Tiwi phrase Yiloga, meaning football.
Season 2023 marks the 17th year the AFL has held the dedicated round and is the eighth year it has been named in honour of Sir Doug Nicholls.
