Analysis

Nine’s winning formula came from a strong performance from Nine News (829, 000), The Block, which hit the million mark in overnights (1, 040,000), 60 Minutes (559, 000) and Nine News Late (295, 000). It is important to note that Nine’s decision to run a late night news bulletin out of 60 Minutes continues to pay dividends.

Seven just missed the half million mark for Farmer Wants a Wife (489, 000). 7NEWS Spotlight (238 000) struggled and its fluctuating audience shows that small or large audiences are dependent on the story of the night. Seven would expect an increase next week with its Michael Jackson feature. A repeat of Homicide with Ron Iddles (157, 000) likewise declined.

There would be some head scratching at 10 for its overnight figures for The Amazing Race Australia (291 000) which is struggling in overnights. 10 would be encouraged though that the audience is sampling the show via other means with Total TV audiences strong. Hawaii Five-0 (117, 000) viewers similarly had weak overnight numbers but continues to have strong uplifts in Total TV. However, other factors such as cost output would be a factor for 10 with Hawaii Five-0 owned by its parent company Paramount, coming at a negligible price compared to 60 Minutes and 7News Spotlight.

One could argue that ABC has the most consistent night with Spicks and Specks (446, 000), Savage River (323, 000) and Silent Witness (209, 000). ABC then usually has massive gains in Total TV for all these programs.
