Home and Away
“Home and Away” (H&A) is an iconic Australian television soap opera that has captivated audiences since its premiere on January 17, 1988, on the Seven Network. Created by Alan Bateman, the show was inspired by his observations during a visit to Kangaroo Point, New South Wales, where locals opposed the construction of a foster home. Originally named “Refuge,” the title was changed to the more welcoming “Home and Away.”
The series debuted with a ninety-minute telefeature, later known as “Home and Away: The Movie.” Each subsequent episode has a 22-minute runtime, contributing to the show’s status as the second longest-running drama series in Australian television history, following “Neighbours.” In Australia, “Home and Away” airs Monday to Thursday at 7:00 pm.
Set in the fictional seaside town of Summer Bay, New South Wales, “Home and Away” follows the lives and loves of its residents.
The story initially revolved around the Fletcher family—Tom (Roger Oakley), Pippa (Vanessa Downing), and their five foster children—who moved from the city to run the Summer Bay caravan park. Over the years, the series has tackled controversial and mature themes such as teen pregnancy, rape, drug addiction, and suicide.
Palm Beach in Sydney’s Northern Beaches serves as the primary filming location for Summer Bay’s exterior scenes, while interior scenes are filmed at the Australian Technology Park in Redfern.
“Home and Away” is one of Australia’s most successful media exports, airing in over 80 countries. It is particularly popular in the UK, where it airs on Channel 5, and is a top-rated show on RTÉ Television in Ireland and TVNZ 2 in New Zealand.
The show has garnered numerous accolades, making it the most awarded program at the Logie Awards with 49 wins, including Most Popular Drama Program. Many cast members have received individual honors, such as the Gold Logie and Silver Logie. In 2015, “Home and Away” was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame, cementing its place in Australian television history.
