WIN appoints Tasmania News Director – WIN Network has announced the appointment of Sophie Kuryl to the role of WIN’s Tasmania News Director.

Sophie takes over the role from Alex Johnston who is moving into a media role within State Politics.

Sophie began her journalism career with the WIN Network more than 15 years ago. She spent time in the Launceston newsroom before returning to Hobart where she began producing nightly news bulletins and reporting across a range of rounds from police to politics, health and sport.

For nearly a decade, Sophie covered courts, winning the Tasmanian Media Award for Excellence in Legal Reporting in 2015. She worked on several high-profile cases including the coronial inquest into the cold case disappearance of Lucille Butterworth, one of the longest murder trials in the state’s history and the ongoing quest for freedom by convicted murderer Susan Neill-Fraser.

In July 2023, Sophie was appointed State Editor, helping to develop and mentor journalists and supporting the production of local bulletins.

In appointing Sophie to the role, WIN’s Network News Director, Stella Lauri said,

“One of the great advantages of being in a local newsroom is the opportunity to develop teams and ensure they have opportunities to grow and progress. Sophie has been with WIN News in Tasmania for more than 15 years and has deep knowledge of the state and its people. This is a well-deserved appointment and I know Sophie will lead with the same dedication she has shown in the past.”

Speaking today, Sophie said,

“I’m passionate about Tasmania and local news and am incredibly excited to take up the role of Tasmanian News Director. I look forward to leading our dedicated and hard-working team of journalists and camera operators covering the issues that matter to communities across the state.”
