The Swap on SBS – In a television first, this original series documents a bold new experiment as 12 students and families – from very different cultures, religions and backgrounds – are thrown into each other’s worlds.
The aim of the experiment is to confront and break down the barriers and stereotypes that divide us. Although we may like to think we live in a successful multicultural society, the reality is most of us live in silos – with very little connection or understanding of people and communities that are different to our own.
Over one school term, the experiment’s participants spend time in each other’s schools, homes and communities. Taking part are six Muslim families, four Catholic families, and two atheist families. For everyone involved, this will be the first time they’ve gotten close to someone who sees the world in a completely different way.
It’s a huge leap into the unknown.
Series One, Episode Three:
In the final stage of The Swap, Ali takes his experiment up a notch. He wants to hold an overnight school camp for The Swap students. But can he persuade the ICB parents to allow their children to attend? While school camps are the norm in many other schools, they aren’t a feature of life at ICB. For Ali, the camp is a litmus test of whether his experiment has helped build bridges of trust and understanding amongst participating families and communities.
There’s a lot at stake, as Ali and the community evaluate whether The Swap experiment has been a success. Has it been able to foster acceptance between very different individuals, and drive lasting change?
The Swap – Final Episode – SBS Commission – Wednesday, 22 March at 7.30pm on SBS and SBS on Demand (3 Parts)
