Livinia Nixon experiences two forms of French artistry in Melbourne (Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country), admiring both paintings and pastries. She kicks off her day at the NGV for the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition, French Impressionism, which is on display until October 5. It is one of the biggest exhibitions of its kind to ever visit Australia, with over 100 paintings from artists like Monet and Renoir on exclusive loan from Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Livinia rounds out her French-themed day with a visit to Lune Croissanterie on Russell Street, a ten-minute walk from the gallery, which is known for making some of the best croissants in the world and has people queuing down the street for its classic and creative monthly specials.
Steve Hooker soaks up the pre-weekend buzz in Richmond (Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country), an area that’s always alive with something new popping up. He starts his day in Cremorne at the new Baker Bleu on Dover Street, a cafe-style bakery where, unlike their other locations, you can dine in on sandwiches, Roman-style pizzas, and pastries. For something fancier, he heads three minutes away to Amatrice Rooftop, a restaurant ten floors up with breathtaking city views and a menu with a tasty Italian flair. Steve wraps up his tour in the backstreets of Richmond at one of his favourites, The Kingston Hotel, a classy yet relaxed venue dating back to the 1850s that has been recently refurbished to create a modern and sophisticated space.
Kris Smith escapes to the Queensland sunshine on the Gold Coast (Bundjalung Country), a region with the best of both worlds, from golden beaches to lush green rainforests.
He begins his tour in the hinterland suburb of Bonogin at the breathtaking Mater Prize Home. A twenty-minute drive back to the coast, Kris stops for brunch at Refinery Coffee in Currumbin Waters, a cafe with a strong local following, a laid-back atmosphere, and an amazing Asian-inspired menu. He ends his day at the picturesque Currumbin Beach, settling in at Tommy’s Italian, a popular beachside restaurant with a great sharing menu and a killer drinks list to enjoy with the ocean views.
Madeline Spark explores one of her favourite seaside towns on the Great Ocean Road, the postcard-perfect Anglesea (Wathaurong Country). She kicks off her day on the water with Anglesea Paddle Boat and Canoe Hire, a local fixture for over forty years, exploring the sparkling river and Coogoorah Reserve. For lunch, she heads to Lovehouse, a laid-back oceanfront spot on the Main Beach with an Asian-inspired menu where for every meal purchased, another is donated to children experiencing food insecurity. Madeline wraps up her tour at Winespeake Cellar + Deli, the second outpost of the beloved Daylesford wine bar, which has traded spa country for seaside and offers an outstanding curated wine list and top-drawer grazing option.
