Better Homes and Gardens on Channel 7 – Adam meets shearing champ Nicki Guttler who’s up against some stiff competition in the sheds.
JOHANNA – BOOMING BATHURST: HERITAGE HIP & RURAL RENEWAL
Bathurst has always been a beautiful, vibrant country town, but with an influx of people and businesses to the region, it’s really been booming recently. So, Joh is going to check out some of the funky new accommodation that both reflects the country location and brings a touch of city living. One such property is an old wool store building now boasting a New York-style loft apartment, created by the Keith clan, who Joh introduced us to a couple of years ago. This former industrial site features the best of both worlds and is at the vanguard of Bathurst urban renewal.
ADAM – CLICK GO THE SHEILAS
Once the domain of men, the wool industry is finally starting to look a bit more feminine with an influx of female shearers. Adam meets shearing champ Nicki Guttler who’s up against some stiff competition in the sheds. The main objective of a shearing competition is to see who can shear a sheep the fastest and the cleanest, with the judges adjudicating by their mistakes on the day. With 8 years shearing experience, Nicki sees the competitions as an opportunity to challenge herself and learn for her day job where she can shear close to 200 sheep in a day. But it’s not just shearing, Adam also learns how the sheared fleece gets handled and processed.
ADAM – WOOD CHOPPERS
In the fast and furious action of the wood chop arena, axes are swinging, woodchips flying and limbs falling off, but thankfully those are tree limbs. Adam learns everything there is to know about this oldest of sports and might even lace up the chain mail socks and give it a go himself. He may not chop through a log in under 15 seconds like his mentor, World Champion Glen Gillam, but he does learn how tough this sport really is. And there’s even some tips to help the home DIYer work more effectively and efficiently.
ADAM – HERITAGE TRADES
An agricultural show wouldn’t be complete without a fair selling handmade goods and The Royal Bathurst Show is no different. Adam is in his element talking to the artists displaying their wares, from blacksmiths, woodworkers and even a whip maker. These heritage tradies might be a dying breed, but at your local country show, you’ll find them alive and well.
FAST ED – BACON & EGG ROLLS, EXTRA SMOKY
Whether you live in the city or the country, a bacon and egg roll is a great way to start the day. But just because it’s a classic breakfast food, doesn’t mean the bacon and egg roll can’t get an upgrade, so Ed’s going to make a luxe version. With delicious vegetables and a smokiness for added flavour, the locals at the Royal Bathurst Show will certainly be glad Ed’s making brekkie.
DR HARRY – JUNIORS IN THE SHOW RING
Despite all the rides, food and showbags, agricultural shows are really all about the animals. At the Royal Bathurst Show, Dr Harry’s going behind the scenes to see what life is like for the kids showing their prized cattle. He’ll see the extraordinary work the kids put in to prepare their animals for competition and even a bit of judging. But it’s not just cattle, there’s lots of horses too. Dr Harry checks out some equine events teaching little kids riding, grooming and handling skills.
FAST ED – THREE VEG FARM WALKAROUND & PARMESAN-INFUSED COUNTRY TOMATO RELISH COOK
In the heart of Bathurst lies a little urban farm that punches above its weight when it comes to producing seasonal produce. Ed roots around this boutique three-acre farm and meets Cathie, who turned this vacant industrial block into not only a thriving little farm, but a welcoming community as well. Cathie shares with us how she uses permaculture techniques to grow the freshest, chemical free produce. So try and stop Ed from using these fresh veggies to make a delicious relish, the perfect accompaniment to a homemade breakfast burger.
CHARLIE – EVOLVING BACKYARD – STAGE THREE
After transforming a plain and boring over two stages, with the budget going up each time, Charlie has reached the climax of this evolving backyard. The budget is going up again, but that means he gets to go all out, transforming the back portion of the garden into an outdoor entertaining area. And of course, being Charlie there are more plants going in around the edges. Making use of the family’s existing firepit, the entertaining area gives the garden some focus and the perfect place to sit and chat with friends on a cool winter’s night.
