Queen: In Their Own Words on Channel 7 and 7plus – Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor, the four founder members of the late great rock band Queen, tell the story of their life and career in music, from the moment a man from Zanzibar called Farrokh Bulsara met May and Taylor in 1970 to his death in 1991.
They were an unusual band. Each of them wrote songs, and each had big hits – there was no Lennon-McCartney or Jagger-Richards in this quartet.
They tell the stories of how they wrote them, from their breakthrough hits ‘Killer Queen’ in 1974 and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in 1975 (both by Mercury) – the latter becoming the 3rd biggest single of all time in the UK.
They became a huge live stadium band, with Mercury’s histrionics fronting them, and hits like May’s ‘Radio Ga Ga’ and ‘We Will Rock You’, Deacon’s ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ and Mercury’s ‘We Are The Champions’ becoming the most-sung anthems at big sports events. Their last hit single with Mercury was Taylor’s ‘These Are The Days Of Our Lives’, a poignant song recorded just before Mercury died of AIDS in 1991 and serving as his quite conscious farewell to his public.
The band members also tell of what happened more privately during their two decades together – the rows, the breaks, the HIV diagnosis but also the highs of becoming a huge touring band, of their Greatest Hits album being the best-selling album in the UK ever, and of performing an immortal set at Live Aid (as Bob Geldof put it, ‘4 songs, 17 minutes, thank you very much – and we’re still talking about it over 30 years later…’).
The programme is a feast of their music, showcasing many of their biggest hits, and coming up close and personal to Queen as never before.
