JOHANNA – MORE THAN A MEAL
OzHarvest has been rescuing wasted food since 2004, when founder Ronni Kahn noticed a huge volume of food going to waste from her own events business. Since then, their bright yellow vans have become ubiquitous around the country, transporting surplus food to all manner of local charities.
Joh goes behind the scenes of their Sydney warehouse and their latest venture, Refettorio, a restaurant that provides high-quality free meals to those in need in a surrounding that helps the patrons have a positive experience and helps restore their dignity.
ADAM – EVERYBODY JUST RELAX
You’ve had your eye on an expensive daybed for a while, it looks great, but the price tag doesn’t. Why not make your own? With inspiration from both Scandi and Japanese styles, Adam will show you how. Using pine panels, dowl and some basic DIY skills, this is a project that is achievable on a weekend.
But it’s not just a daybed, it’s made up of two parts, meaning you can split it and create two seats if you want to. Not only will it look great, but it will give you something to relax on once you’re done!
FAST ED – FAMILY BUDGET MEALS: PICKLED PORK WITH CINNAMON SEMOLINA AND SEARED GREEN BEANS
We’ve all loved corned beef, but did you know that there is delicious alternative in your meat cabinet? It’s made the same way, but from pork instead. It’s just as easy to make, and according to Ed, even tastier. You could serve it with mashed potato, but Ed’s going with Semolina and some green beans. But whichever way you go, it’s a brilliant, budget-friendly, family dinner.
FAST ED – FAMILY BUDGET MEALS: SNOW EGGS
Ed started his cooking journey making classic desserts, so he’s always happy to revisit the good ol’ days when he can. Tonight, he’s making Snow Eggs, which sound difficult to make, but actually only requires three little steps. For all its fancy roots, its quite simple and inexpensive enough to be perfect for any family meal. No, make that every family meal.
GRAHAM – GARDEN BEAUTY AT BROUGHTON HALL
Amidst a 270-acre farm, the garden at Broughton Hall is a six-acre oasis of colourfully rich foliage, precision clipped hedges and detailed topiary that creates a formal framework for flowers to play. All this makes it one of Graham’s favourite gardens in Victoria.
No wonder he’s so delighted to be back. Like so many gardeners at this time of year, the owner has been busy planning and preparing for the amazing Spring and Summer seasons. But it’s now, at the tail end of the Winter highlights that will inspire every one of us!
CHARLIE – READY TO GROW
Not owning your own property doesn’t have to mean you can’t do some gardening.
Charlie’s going to show a couple of flatmates, Hannah and Dillon, how to build a planter box that’s perfect for renters who want to add some green love. But of course, being Charlie, he can’t resist a little garden spruce-up to accompany the planter boxes. By teaching Hannah and Dillon the basic DIY skills required to build the planter box themselves, he’ll arm them with the expertise they can use for future projects, either here or at their next place.
MELISSA – GROWING GINGER IN A POT
Ginger’s a great flavour in your cooking and healthy for you to boot. But have you ever thought about growing your own? It’s ridiculously easy and Melissa will show you how.
JULIET – LOST SOCK UPCYCLE
There can’t be a household in the world that doesn’t have a problem with orphaned socks. But don’t worry if you can’t match up those pairs, Juliet has a few great ideas to upcycle them. You can make no-sew heat packs for around the neck or smaller packs can be used for targeted areas or even as hacky sacks. And just for fun, how about a sock puppet, full of personality, for the kids.
DR HARRY – MINIATURE HORSES LEAD THE WAY
They may be small in stature, but the Berakah miniature horses are good at teaching important life lessons. And as Dr Harry discovers on his visit to a school on the Sunshine Coast, they’ve also captured the hearts of the school community.
Students there are involved in the miniature horse show team and have the responsibility of caring for and training a dozen or so mini horses in a unique mentoring program that teaches teamwork and leadership skills. Let’s go meet these mini mentors!
AIMEE – RUBY’S ROAD TO WORLDSKILLS
As a qualified plumber herself, Aimee is on a mission to encourage more women to get into the trades. Tonight, she’s meeting an inspiring young lady tradie who has a passion for painting. Whilst working for a mostly female painting company, she’s been undergoing her studies at TAFE, where her work ethic, attention to detail and skills with a brush haven’t gone unnoticed.
She’s going to the national championships for Worldskills Australia, dubbed “the tradie Olympics”, to try and win her way to Paris and put her skills to the ultimate test on the world stage.
