Movie Review | Monkey Man now in cinemas

Monkey Man is inspired by the legend of Hanuman, an icon embodying strength and courage, Monkey Man stars Patel as Kid, an anonymous young man who ekes out a meager living in an underground fight club where, night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash.

“John Wick on steroids” – TV Central

After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite. As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

“Moving forward in life with purpose, rather than feeding pain can lead to…… a lot of violence” – TV Central

The movie tried to link to the legend of Hanuman, perhaps suggesting that Patel’s character is somehow connected to its origin but either failed to do so or its relevance was very limited.

If the movie kept things simple and simply came from the premise that it was a John Wick / Equalizer revenge action film, it would have a greater amount of potential. Instead, the film was bogged down in a mystic backstory that was neither relevant or interesting to the main story.

Rating

Aaron: 4 / 10 “A film that will divide the audience that will grapple with the violence, purpose, destiny, violence, pain, heartache and love that the movie stirs within and will ask you if the means justify the end”

Zak: 1 / 10 “Monkey Man was not a legend of Hanuman, but rather a poor imitation and weaker version of John Wick”

Monkey Man – now screening in cinemas across Australia

Monkey Man

Cinema Experience:

The preview screening was at Hoyts at Carousel, Western Australia. Cinemas are only as good as the customer service you experience when something goes wrong. Corporate management do not respond to emails, do not return calls, send tickets in which the codes/pin do not work and Carousel cinema staff do not answer the phone when trying to call on a regular basis. The preview screening on this occasion was satisfactory but this reviewer would recommend any cinema chain other than Hoyts to see movies.
