Movie Review | Imaginary now in cinemas

Imaginary immerses viewers in a suspenseful and gripping tale that taps into childhood nostalgia with a chilling twist.

DeWanda Wise shines as Jessica, who returns to her childhood home only to discover her stepdaughter Alice’s unsettling attachment to her teddy bear, Chauncey. What begins as a cute quirk spirals into a sinister turn reminiscent of horror classics like Chucky, but “Imaginary” offers more than jump scares.

Unlike typical horror fare, this film delves into deeper layers reminiscent of “The Sixth Sense” rather than the usual slasher flicks. The personal connection it evokes, especially for those who once had imaginary friends, adds an extra layer of suspense. However, the story takes a sharp turn towards science fiction towards the end, distancing itself from the grounded terror that preceded it.

What sets “Imaginary” apart is its refusal to follow predictable storytelling tropes, offering a refreshing take on the genre. While the film may occasionally stray into the realm of the unbelievable, it still manages to provoke thought and keep audiences engaged. Plus, it will make you think twice about those innocent-looking teddy bears.

Imaginary – now screening in cinemas across Australia

Cinema Experience:

The preview screening at Events Cinema in Innaloo, Western Australia, provided a mixed experience. While the cinema itself was comfortable and staff were friendly, the overall atmosphere was marred by long queues at the understaffed café. Despite these shortcomings, the vibrant setting still offered an enjoyable moviegoing experience.
