FUNCTIONALITY WITHIN BEAUTY: CONCRETE LANDSCAPE – AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE

CONCRETE LANDSCAPE explores the emotional and family connections between celebrated Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza and Brazil, as he discusses the design of the Iberê Camargo Foundation Museum in Porto Alegre.

This feature documentary also showcases the Pritzker-prize winner’s body of famous works; the inspiration and pragmatism behind his unique style; his reflections on the future of Porto Alegre’s concrete landscape on the edge of the Guaíba River; as well as the “Fio de Ariadne” (Ariadne’s Thread) exhibition at the Iberê Museum.

GRABOWSKA-HAWRYLAK’S WROCLAW: (UN)USUAL MANHATTAN

How does stubbornness, determination and vision create an architectural icon that encapsulated the defiance of an entire people?

(UN)USUAL MANHATTAN follows the story of Jadwiga Grabowska-Hawrylak, a visionary architect who designed a stunning concrete estate in 1970s Wrocław, Poland during the  Soviet occupation. With her work now considered an icon of social modernism; this feature documentary takes us on a journey to observe the estate’s impact after over 50 years of use. 

Explore the micro world of the estate’s apartments, corridors, yards, and basements; examining its influence on Polish society and the country itself. The film reflects on how architecture can shape a society and explores the legacy of Grabowska-Hawrylak’s work, which continues to inspire the next generation of architects. 

Through interviews with architects, residents, and experts, the film sheds light on the power of design and the lasting impact of architecture on our lives.

GEORGE NAKASHIMA: CONOID STUDIO 

Trailblazer. Craftsman. Utilitarian. 

A true man of many talents, join us for a short but deep dive into the life and work of the late George Nakashima. 

Through an interview with his daughter Mira, this short film is framed through the design of his most ambitious building – the Conoid Studio – and tells a story of hope and perseverance. 

An architect, internment camp detainee, chicken farmer, world-renowned furniture maker and founding father of the American craft movement; this short film gives us a glimpse into Nakashima’s ability to overcome adversity and find beauty and meaning not only for himself but for generations to come.
