As the war drew to a close in 1945, the geopolitical landscape changed dramatically. With Roosevelt’s death and Truman’s ascension to the highest office, a new phase of the Grand Alliance had begun, and the military strategies, key battles, and grim discoveries made as Allied forces closed in on Germany, would all lead to the beginning of a new world order.
Season One, Episode Three: Aftermath And The Atomic Age (Saturday, 20 September, 5.30pm)
The war in Europe was over, but heavy fighting continued in the East, and President Truman was desperate to bring the war to a close in the Pacific theatre. With the US Manhattan Project successfully testing the first nuclear bomb in July 1945, the US no longer needed Soviet help to overpower the Japanese forces who were dominating in the region.
