UEFA EURO 2024™ on Optus Sport 7 July – England have once again found a way to progress at EURO 2024, this time beating Switzerland on penalties to secure their spot in the semi-finals.
In a tense and nervy encounter, it was Switzerland who made the late breakthrough, with Breel Embolo’s far-post finish putting the Swiss ahead with just 15 minutes remaining.
But it took England just five minutes to reply, with Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka producing a moment of brilliance with a low shot to bring the score levels. The late flurry of goals gave way to more cagey play in extra-time as neither side were able to breakthrough.
And England were then indebted to goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, who saved the Switzerland’s first penalty from Manuel Akanji, before penalties from Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Saka, Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnold made it a perfect five from five to seal England’s place at the semi-finals.
There, they will face Netherlands, who had to battle from a goal down to overcome a spirited Türkiye side 2-1 in the final quarter-final match of EURO 2024.
Samet Akaydin’s effort had put Türkiye in front after 35 minutes and for much of the game it appeared as if their fairytale run in the tournament would continue.
But Netherlands have continued to grow with each match at EURO 2024 and with the clock ticking down in the second half, a stunning five-minute turnaround saw two quick-fire goals from Stefan de Vrij and a Mert Müldür own goal swing the pendulum the Netherlands’ way.
And despite facing increased pressure from Türkiye, Netherland held on for the win and will now move forward to face England in the semi-final.
That match will be played on Thursday, July 11, at 5am (AEST) – live and exclusive on Optus Sport.
