Walking Wartime England on SBS – Former Royal Marine Arthur Williams walks across Britain to learn about World War II, including details of women who became spies, teenagers who went down the mines, and inventors who created new weapons used in the conflict.

Series One, Episode Four: Sunday, 7 May at 5.30pm

On this walk Arthur is in Hampshire, a county which became a hotbed of secret operations during the war. In Southampton, Arthur discovers the story of R.J. Mitchell, Supermarine’s Spitfire designer who took the RAF from lumbering biplanes to acrobatic wonder planes.

But almost as soon as the Spitfire was airborne, the Germans destroyed the Supermarine factory, and the government scattered manufacture across the country.
