The Mayfair Hotel Megabuild on SBS – Claridge’s Hotel – icon of old school glamour and favourite of celebrities and royalty – is undergoing its biggest transformation of modern times.

Filmed over six years, this documentary series follows the incredible engineering challenges involved in digging out a five storey mega-basement, adding four new floors to the top of the hotel, and creating what’s likely to be London’s most expensive penthouse.

Series One, Episode Two:

It’s just over halfway through the seven-year renovation project and work continues just metres above and below Claridge’s esteemed guests, including Stephen Jones, milliner to royalty, social media influencer, Kate Elisabeth and supermodel, Erin O’Conner.

A Victorian-style dormer roof extension is being constructed in sections in Northern Ireland before being shipped over to Mayfair, and below ground the basement finally reaches its fifth level.

But then Covid-19 forces the hotel to close for the first time in over 100 years. How will Claridge’s survive lockdown, and will the team get back on track and complete this audacious build?

The Mayfair Hotel Megabuild – New Episode – Wednesday, 14 June at 8.30pm on SBS and SBS on Demand (3 Parts)
