JOHANNA – THE FARM WITH HEART
In the Byron Bay hinterland sits Summerland farm, the beating heart of the region. Not only do they grow avocadoes and macadamias in vast orchards but they highlight the region’s other produce via their onsite providore. As Joh learns during a tour, there’s also a petting zoo with lots of animals and a high-end restaurant to make the most of all that fresh produce. Despite all that, it’s the fact the business employs over 100 disabled members of the community that really provides the most joy. So, while most farms grow food to nourish the body, this farm also nourishes the soul.
ADAM – A SIMPLE GATE
Does your garden gate look ok, but upon closer inspection it’s rotting and overdue for replacement? Well, you’re not the only one and as Adam explains, a gate that doesn’t shut properly risks the safety of our kids and our pets. If your old timber framed gate is too far gone to be restored, Adam’s got a long-lasting and easier to make option, a prefabricated metal frame you can buy off the shelf at your hardware store. Timber slats give this new gate a classic look and all this can be done in a day!
KAREN – BAHN MI BURGER
East meets west tonight as Karen combines two favourite dishes, the burger and the Banh Mi. Taking the buns from a burger and the pate, vegetables and flavours of a Banh Mi, Karen creates a delicious meeting of two worlds. And of course, what burger would be complete without a fried egg? This makes for an easy and delicious midweek meal or a perfect entertainer when friends drop by.
FAST ED – HOMEMADE FALAFEL WITH TAHINI & SALAD
Making falafel can require some planning as you soak chickpeas overnight. But Ed will show you how to make delicious falafel a quicker way. Falafels are all about the spices which means you can create your own blend, depending on what flavours you prefer. And they wouldn’t be complete without a dipping sauce, so Ed will also show you how to make a simple, but oh so tasty tahini-based sauce. Serve with a fresh salad and you’ve got a delicious snack or starter.
FAST ED – VEGETARIAN – POLENTA BOARD WITH MUSHROOMS & ROUGH HERB SAUCE
A healthy alternative to carby bread, pasta or rice is the Italian dish, Polenta. You can make it hard, in which it can be cut up and fried, or you can enjoy it soft and creamy, which is the way Ed’s preparing it. For a nice Autumnal flavour Ed’s adding mushrooms and herbs and a fresh salad on the side to balance out the flavours. For the ultimate sharing experience, spread it over a large platter and let everyone dig in.
MELISSA – COTTAGE KITCHEN GARDEN
Have you ever pictured what it would be like to live in the home you grew up in, but through adult eyes? Melissa tours the home of a garden designer who’s done just that; purchased his old family home. Keen to put his own stamp on the property, he’s changed a more native garden into a romantic, English-style cottage garden, complete with a productive veggie patch. Tonight, Charlie’s rejuvenating the front yard of a federation era home that has a beautiful front porch featuring tessellated tiles. So, he’s going to complement those with a traditional formal garden and has great tips for choosing the right plants, materials and creating a solid base when working with sandstone. This classic old home will now have the classic new garden it deserves.
