Airing at 9.00pm on SBS VICELAND and streaming free on SBS On Demand, the eight-part series follows veteran shipwreck hunter Jeff MacKinnon as he embarks on a race against time to uncover long-lost treasures hidden beneath one of the world’s most dangerous stretches of ocean.
A notorious stretch of ocean
Known as the Death Coast, this unforgiving region of the North Atlantic has claimed more than 6,000 ships over the centuries.
Merchant vessels, warships and pirate ships all met their fate in these turbulent waters, leaving behind priceless artefacts and stories lost to history beneath the waves.
For the past decade, salvage operations have been prohibited in the area. But after a lengthy battle for access, Jeff MacKinnon has secured exclusive rights to dive and search the wrecks.
A race against the elements
MacKinnon and his team have just 12 weeks to complete their mission before the harsh conditions of the Death Coast make diving impossible.
In tonight’s premiere episode, The Hunt Begins, the third-generation shipwreck hunter sets his sights on one of history’s most tantalising maritime mysteries: Le Chameau.
The 18th-century French cargo and passenger vessel sank carrying a fortune in rare coins and valuable cargo, with its exact resting place remaining a mystery for more than 300 years.
Armed with a centuries-old map and supported by an expert team of divers, MacKinnon launches an ambitious expedition to uncover the legendary wreck before the relentless North Atlantic weather shuts the operation down.
