The Airport Chaplain lands on SBS and SBS On Demand in August – SBS has confirmed its new Australian drama The Airport Chaplain will premiere on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.
The eight-part series stars Hugo Weaving and Shabana Azeez. It follows the workers, passengers and unexpected connections inside a busy international airport.
For SBS, the series is a major local drama play for August. It also gives the broadcaster a rare Australian original with a global pathway, as the series will launch outside Australia on Netflix.

What is The Airport Chaplain about?
Weaving plays Tobias Wallace, a fast-moving airport fixer who believes there is no crisis he cannot solve.
That confidence is tested when he meets his new boss, Mira, played by Azeez. She sees Tobias as less of a saviour and more of a workplace risk.
Their clash draws in the airport’s cleaners, baggage handlers and passengers. Each person is moving through moments of hope, pressure, grief and change.

The ensemble cast includes Claudia Karvan, Thomas Weatherall, Erroll Shand, Kavitha Anandasivam and Jackson Tozer.
Also appearing are Elias Anton, Arka Das, Fanny Hanusin, Echo Palo, Nicholas Denton, George Mason, Brenna Harding, Michael Logo, Priscilla Doueihy, Claude Jabbour and Ras-Samuel Welda’abzgi.
The Airport Chaplain comes from Wooden Horse. It is co-created and executive produced by Elise McCredie and Jude Troy.
The series is written by McCredie, Sarah Bassiuoni, Mithila Gupta and Vidya Rajan. Bonnie Moir and Tig Terera direct the series.

The series will also stream on SBS On Demand with subtitles in Arabic, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese.

The Airport Chaplain premieres Wednesday, 26 August 2026, at 8.30pm on SBS.
Double episodes will air weekly on Wednesdays. All eight episodes will be available to stream on SBS On Demand from 26 August.
