SBS and Koorie Heritage Trust announce three-year First Nations partnership – SBS and the Koorie Heritage Trust have announced a new three-year partnership to celebrate First Nations cultures, communities, artists and businesses.
The partnership will support major cultural events at Federation Square in Naarm/Melbourne.
It will also create new ways for Australians to connect with First Nations stories, creativity and community.
Partnership to support major cultural events
As part of the agreement, SBS will sponsor several key annual events from the Koorie Heritage Trust.
These include the NAIDOC Week First Peoples Art and Design Market on Friday, 10 July.
The partnership will also support the Koorie Krismas First Peoples Art and Design Market in December and the Mabo Day Concert in June.
In addition, the NAIDOC Week market forms part of SBS’s wider involvement in community events around the country during NAIDOC Week.
Through the partnership, SBS will provide event support, promotional opportunities and in-kind services.
The broadcaster will also have an on-the-ground presence at each event. As a result, SBS will help engage audiences and amplify the celebrations.
KHT will deliver cultural programming and learning opportunities for SBS employees and audiences.
Together, the organisations aim to elevate First Nations voices and support First Nations artists, businesses and cultural exchange.
SBS celebrates shared connection
SBS Director of First Nations, Tanya Denning-Orman, said the partnership would help more Australians experience First Nations culture and creativity.
“The Koorie Heritage Trust creates opportunities for people to experience and celebrate First Nations cultures, creativity and community, and we’re proud to be reaching more Australians through this new partnership.”
Denning-Orman said the partnership made sense because both organisations have a home at Federation Square.
“As two organisations with a home at Federation Square in the heart of Naarm, it makes sense for us to come together around a shared commitment to championing First Nations cultures. Together we can amplify these important events, celebrate First Nations artists, businesses and communities and create more opportunities for Australians to connect with the stories, perspectives and cultures they showcase. This partnership will also help foster a deeper cultural understanding across our own organisation.”
Koorie Heritage Trust welcomes partnership
CEO of Koorie Heritage Trust, Tom Mosby, said KHT was proud to partner with SBS.
“The Koorie Heritage Trust is proud to partner with SBS to celebrate and showcase the extraordinary creativity, culture and resilience of First Peoples. At KHT, we believe culture is strongest when it is shared.”
Mosby said partnerships like this can create more opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, designers and cultural practitioners.
He also said the events invite Australians to engage with the world’s oldest continuing living cultures in meaningful and respectful ways.
