SBS and Mint Pictures to chronicle the Bondi terror attack in major feature documentary – Told through the voices of survivors, families of the victims, first responders and the ordinary people who stepped forward to help those attacked at the Chanukah by the Sea event, Bondi will draw on unparalleled access, allowing audiences to more deeply understand what happened on December 14 at Bondi Beach.
In response to an event that profoundly affected all Australians, SBS has moved to create a lasting record shaped by those most directly impacted. Anchored in firsthand testimony and archive, the documentary focuses on the human impact of the attack: the lives changed, the acts of courage that emerged, and the lasting effect on families and the broader community.
Head of SBS Unscripted Joseph Maxwell said:
“This was an unprecedented event that shattered so many lives across Australia, and particularly the Australian Jewish community. We are committed to backing bold documentaries that inspire conversation and explore issues that go to the heart of SBS’s purpose. In the experienced hands of Mint Pictures our hope is this documentary will inspire meaningful discussion and be a lasting record of this terrible moment in our nation’s history.“
Mint Pictures Creative Director Dan Goldberg said:
“With Bondi, our intention is to create a deeply human account shaped by the voices of survivors, families and first responders – not just of that horrific day but the spike in antisemitism that led up to it and shredded our social cohesion. We are honoured to be partnering with Australia’s multicultural network to develop a film that explores this tragic story with authenticity and sensitivity.”
Further details will be announced in due course.
