Mystery Of The First Temple on SBS and SBS on Demand – On a remote hillside in modern-day Turkey sits Göbekli Tepe, the world’s oldest known temple. Built around 9,500 BC—thousands of years before Stonehenge—this monumental site’s towering stone pillars are carved with scorpions, vultures, and other powerful predators, hinting at a ritual sanctuary unlike anything seen before or since.
New evidence suggests Göbekli Tepe may have been more than a ceremonial centre. Surrounded by abundant wildlife and near the headwaters of the Tigris and Euphrates, it may have been a rare paradise where hunter-gatherers could gather, settle, and thrive.
Yet, at the height of its significance, Göbekli Tepe was deliberately buried and abandoned. Why was this extraordinary site erased from the landscape? This documentary series investigates the secrets of Göbekli Tepe, exploring its revolutionary role in human history and the enduring mystery behind its disappearance.
