Marilyn Monroe: The Rise Of An Icon on SBS and SBS on Demand – In February 1954, Marilyn Monroe interrupted her honeymoon in Japan with Joe DiMaggio and flew to a warn-torn Korea, invited by the American army to do a tour intended to cheer up the GIs.
During those four days, she sang in front of more than 100,000 soldiers. Overcoming the freezing cold and her stage fright, she performed her signature songs, such as “Diamonds are A Girl’s Best Friend”, over the course of 10 shows. For Marilyn Monroe, it was a defining moment.
By performing on stage for the very first time, she would meet her American audience, but also reveal herself. Later, she would say it was the first time she ever “felt like a star”.
Thanks to fully restored archive footage, this film dives into a little-known yet pivotal episode in the life and career of Marilyn Monroe. Through this journey, we also witness the story of the Korean War and the portrait of a profoundly anti-communist America.
